European Technical jobs 22/03/2012
Early in 2011, Intel put out the word that it planned to hire 1000 software engineers by the end of the year in the U.S. It beat its deadline. Now, it wants to do the same thing in Europe. Aiming to strengthen its R&D capacity in the greater Europe region (Europe, Russia, and Israel), Intel expects to hire about 1000 software engineers in 2012, with most of them based in Poland, Finland, France, Romania, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Intel is by no means the only company on the hunt for qualified applicants. Competition for technical talent on the continent “is fierce,” says Stephanie Lee, Intel’s Manager for European Staffing. Google, Siemens, Nvidia, Microsoft, Qualcomm, and Huawei are among the dozens of other multinational firms each looking to fill hundreds of positions. European Aeronautics, Defense & Space (EADS), which is partially owned by the governments of Germany, France, and Spain, says it is looking for more than 2000 engineers and IT professionals in France, nearly 2000 in Germany, and about 500 in Spain and the UK—about the same numbers EADS hired in 2011. The fact that engineers are much sought after in Europe was evident in the most recent edition of the quarterly journal European Vacancy Monitor, which lists occupations in highest demand by country. Engineering ranked first in the UK and Bulgaria, and was second in demand in Germany, Romania, Norway, Ireland, and Spain. Engineering ranked fourth in Slovenia, fifth in Poland, and seventh in France and Sweden.

Planned downtime for IEEE renewal and join applications 27/02/2012
Colleagues, As IEEE prepares to launch its new e-commerce platform on 1 April, there will be two periods of downtime where the IEEE renewal and join applications will not be available. It is important that you are aware of this in planning any outreaches to members, and to address any inquiries you may get from members who are experiencing difficulty. The first period of downtime will be two days, 2– 3 March 2012, as we make updates to prepare for the official launch. We ask that you defer any outreaches for the period 27 February through 3 March 2012. The second period of downtime will be 29 March – 1 April 2012. This is when the platform upgrade will take place. We kindly ask that you not conduct any outreaches from 26 March through 2 April 2012, to avoid a frustrating experience for any member who attempts to renew during this time. After the new e-commerce platform is deployed, members and prospective members will benefit from a greatly enhanced user experience for joining and renewing memberships through a single-page application. In addition, members and customers will enjoy an enhanced ability to customize communication preferences, among other enhancements that make this new platform a simple, intuitive interface. In addition, new security procedures will be in effect after deployment. The first time users visit one of these newly designed services pages they will be prompted to change their account user name to a valid e-mail address and establish two security questions. IEEE will be communicating with members about these important updates immediately after the deployment has been completed, so stay tuned for more information in the coming months. The IEEE Contact Center will be prepared to assist members before, during and after the transition, though we expect this to be a smooth and seamless process for our members. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve the IEEE member experience. Regards, John Day, Director - Membership Development

Resoconto Biophotonics 04/08/2011
In particolare, le varie sessioni del Workshop vertevano su Fiber-based Sensing Technologies, Sensing Platforms, Spectroscopy- Microscopy and Imaging Techniques, Optical Manipulation, Trapping and Ablation, Nano- Biophotonics and Materials, Optofluidic Platform, Diagnostic and Therapeutic Applications.

Photonic Crystal Fibers 01/08/2007
By F. Poli, A. Cucinotta, S. Selleri (Univ. of Parma) a new book of the Springer Series in Material Science, 1st Ed. 248 p., July 2007.
Photonic crystal fibers, also known as microstructured or holey fibers, have recently generated great interest in the scientific community thanks to the new ways provided to control and guide light, not obtainable with conventional optical fibers. Proposed for the first time in the 90's, photonic crystal fibers have driven an exciting and irrepressible research activity all over the World, starting in the telecommunication field and then touching metrology, spectroscopy, microscopy, astronomy, micromachining, biology and sensing. This book is intended to provide an expert guidance through the properties of photonic crystal fibers, with a specific focus on the telecommunication aspects.

Silvano Donati è stato insignito del LEOS Distinguished Lecturer Award 07-08 06/06/2007
The IEEE LEOS (Laser Electro Optics Society) has appointed our Past-President Silvano Donati a Distinguished Lecturer for the period July 07 to June 08. Title of the talk is: "Coupling dynamics in semiconductor lasers and applications to self-mixing interferometry and chaotic cryptography" Summary: In this talk, after a brief theoretical introduction to mutual and self coupling phenomena in laser oscillator, two applications are described in details. The first is self-mixing interferometry for measurements of dimensional quantities (displacement, distance, vibration, and angle) and physical quantities (coupling factors, line width, alfa- factor). In this case, the laser undergoes self- injection at weak level, leading to an amplitude and frequency modulation driven by external optical path. The second application is optical chaos, which is generated by the laser source at strong level of injection. We describe mutual and self-injection generation of chaos, and the first step of development to cryptography, that is, synchronization. Then, we will review several schemes of coding and decoding of information, i.e., chaotic masking and CSK (chaos shift keying) and how they can be implemented, along with theoretical results and experimental trials carried out recently. Professor Donati is with University of Pavia, Department of Electronics, where he leads the Optoelectronic Group. Papers on the topics covered by his lecture can be found on the website http://www.unipv.it/donati
